Cryptocurrencies allow new functionalities. To ensure that these new functionalities don't harm the underlying blockchain, testnets are used.
A testnet is a test network on which engineers can experiment with the new functionalities without compromising the working of the leading network.
A faucet is a web-based service that gives free tokens to clients of the testnet that run a stake pool or other hub.
Note: This Educative Answer uses a MetaMask account. If you don't have an account yet, please follow the instructions linked here to create a new account.
The following are the steps to request funds from the Rinkeby testnet:
Note: If the web page isn’t similar to the one shown above, perform the following steps first before proceeding:
- Click the MetaMask icon in the extension bar.
- Click your profile image.
- Navigate to Settings -> Advanced.
- Make sure the “Show test networks” option is turned on.
A popup opens that shows the status of the request. A completed request status looks like the following:
Lastly, you can verify the transaction under the "Activity tab" inside the MetaMask extension, as shown below:
