S3 Monitoring Using CloudWatch

Learn to monitor an S3 bucket using CloudWatch.

AWS CloudWatch is the resource monitoring service that allows monitoring by collecting logs, metrics, and events.

However, we can do a lot more than just monitoring with CloudWatch. We can configure alerts based on a specific metric and perform automated tasks. Moreover, it always helps in troubleshooting issues related to any AWS service.

Types of S3 metrics monitored using CloudWatch

Storage metrics

Using storage metrics, we can monitor the “Total number of objects” and the “Total bucket size.” These metrics are enabled by default and can be viewed directly on the AWS S3 console as well.

  1. Go to S3 and choose the bucket.
  2. Navigate to the “Metrics” tab. We’ll find the bucket’s storage metrics and graphs.
