Avalara offers automated software solutions to businesses for their tax compliance needs. Developers can learn and integrate Avalara’s AvaTax API. The API automatically calculates the appropriate tax on business transactions using the correct tax rates and the rules of the jurisdiction in which the company falls.  

In this course, you’ll learn how to integrate and set up a business account in Avalara. You’ll then learn about the tax codes in Avalara and how to customize them. This course will also walk you through handling product taxability. You’ll also learn to record and manage business transactions so that AvaTax automatically calculates the tax for us. 

By the end of the course, you’ll have hands-on experience integrating an e-commerce web application with the AvaTax API.

Calculating Sales Tax Using Avalara's AvaTax API in Python

Tax codes reference the set of rules and regulations that define how a particular item is to be taxed. We provide a tax code and the corresponding item code when recording a transaction in Avalara. Avalara calculates the tax for the recorded transaction based on these two codes.

The `{{BASE_URL}}/companies/{{companyId}}/taxcodes/` endpoint in Avalara helps us create these tax codes. We can also use pre-defined [tax codes](https://taxcode.avatax.avalara.com/) available in Avalara to calculate the tax for an item correctly according to the jurisdictions the item falls in.
