Descriptive Statistics

Let’s take a look at the descriptive statistics and error bars.

We’ve already learned to apply a range of descriptive approaches to Darwin’s maize data. With small data sets, it’s more useful to plot the individual values, but if the group size is large enough, then boxplots provide a richer summary. Since boxplots display five estimates, we need sample sizes larger than that for each group being summarized. Other modern alternatives include violin plots.
