Educative Answers Team

Hyperledger Greenhouse is an open-source consortium for developing business blockchain technologies that is hosted by the Linux Foundation. Within the greenhouse, diverse global communities collaboratively develop open-source projects that uniquely approach enterprise blockchain challenges. These technologies can cross-pollinate and inter-operate, just as the communities driving the projects collaborate in an open and neutral environment.

Hyperledger Indy

Hyperledger Indy is one of the frameworks provided by the Hyperledger Greenhouse. It is a distributed ledger that provides tools, libraries, and reusable components for creating and using independent decentralized identities. As the world becomes more connected, individuals are disclosing personal information and creating multiple usernames and passwords, which means that they are leaving digital traces across platforms.

Indy represents the idea of a self-sovereign identity that would get rid of the need for multiple usernames and passwords. Based on a distributed ledger, this identity inter-operates across several domains, applications, and organizational silos. Additionally, Indy puts control of the identity in the hands of the user, not the organization. That is, individuals will not have to rely on big organizations to store and share their personal data. Instead, the user can determine what data is accessible and for how long.

Security and privacy

Indy provides strong security guarantees because private data is exchanged over peer-to-peer encrypted connections instead of being written on the ledger. Also, every relationship has a unique id that ensures that the data doesn’t leak from one relationship to another.

Indy makes sure that individuals and institutions always know who they are dealing with. Companies are able to store less personal data and, therefore, they have to spend less time and money protecting it. This combination of privacy and trust provides a solution for digital credentials that preserves privacy and results in meaningful interactions.
