There were many enhancements from the Perl 5.32.0 release and the 5.34.0 release. Click here for a full list of differences between the two versions.

In this shot, let’s talk about perlgov in Perl 5.34.0.

Perlgov

Perlgov refers to the system of Perl governance within the Perl programming language. This includes working on language definition, implementation, test suites, documentation, and the policies and procedures which maintain the programming language. This system of governance includes a bodygoverning body comprised of responsible people that is supposed to make key decisions according to its powers.

The goal is to advance Perl as functional, sustainable, and transparent for all its users.

Important roles

There are three important roles in Perl governance:

  1. Core Team: People who are involved in the development process of Perl language. This can be anyone, and it is not required for core team members to be developers.

  2. Steering Council: A total of 3 people elected by the core team. This can also include non-Core team members.

  3. Vote Administrator: This is an important role when elections occur. The Vote Administrator is responsible for managing communication, ballots, and all other election-related activities.

What’s new?

In Perl v5.34.0, there have been certain changes to the Perl policy of governance. Notable additions include several pod files, such as perlpolicy. Perlpolicy refers to several sundry policies regarding Perl core.
