What is the chance() method in Euphoria?

Overview

The chance() method is a built-in Euphoria function. It’s very useful when dealing with chance events, as the name implies. We can simulate the probability of getting a desired event using the chance() method.

Syntax

chance(desired_limit,max_limit)

Parameters

  • desired_limit: This is an atom variable. It represents the desired chance of an event occurring.
  • top_limit: This is an atom with a default value of 100. It indicates the maximum chance of an event occurring. The default is 100.

Return value

It returns an integer 1 if the desired event happens. Otherwise, it returns 0.

How it works

For example, let’s say the chance of rain today is 25%. We can simulate this by simply using chance() to check the possibility of it raining today.

chance(25)

Also, we can simulate the possibility of something most likely occurring 400 times out of 1000 possibilities like this:

chance(400, 1000)

The chance() method will carry out a probability simulation and return 1 if our desired outcome is possible and 0 if not.

Example

Let’s put our above sample in the code snippet below and see what the outcome is.

include std/rand.e
atom desired_limit = 400
atom max_limit = 1000
atom output
--call the chance method
output = chance(desired_limit, max_limit)
print(1,chance(desired_limit, max_limit))
puts(1,"\n")
print(1, output)
--a different sample
puts(1,"\n")
print(1,chance(50))

Note: The code on lines 7 and 8 is the same. If you run the code multiple times, it shows that two different simulations on the parameter values may not produce the same output. This is because we’re talking about probability and uncertainty. We can’t be sure of the outcome. It can go either way.

Explanation

  • Line 1: We import the std/rand.e module from the standard library.
  • Lines 2 to 4: We declare some variables.
  • Lines 7 to 9: We use the chance method on some values and print the outcome to the screen.
