In HTML, the <rp> element is used to provide fall-back parentheses around a ruby text. This is normally used for browsers that lack the support to display ruby annotations using the <ruby> element.

Syntax

<ruby>
symbol<rp>(</rp><rt>annotation</rt><rp>)</rp>
</ruby>

The opening and closing brackets are enclosed within the <rp> element. These brackets contain the text that we want to display as annotations.
