Choosing the Right Chart for Your Message

Explore how to effectively choose the right chart type to match your data message. Understand how comparisons, trends, distributions, relationships, and matrix patterns each require specific visualizations like bar charts, line charts, box plots, scatter plots, or heatmaps. Learn to formulate your question first to select a chart that clearly communicates insights, ensuring your data storytelling is both accurate and informative.

Weekend staffing depends on whether order volume is rising, stable, or highly variable across recent weekends. A table of daily order counts contains the needed numbers, but the table does not make the staffing message visible. Before plotting, we must state the question in one sentence.

If the question is whether Saturday receives more orders than Sunday, the message is a comparison. If the question is whether orders have risen across eight weekends, the message is a trend. If the question is whether daily orders usually cluster near 500 but occasionally reach 900, the message concerns spread.

A chart choice contract connects the question to the visual form. The chart must make the intended comparison easy to see. It should not require readers to calculate a pattern that the chart could display directly. Data format does not choose the chart. A pandas DataFrame with date and order_count columns can support a line chart, a bar chart, or a box plot because each answers a different question.

Match the message before seeing the data

Once the message is clear, the chart type follows from what readers must compare. A comparison asks how named categories differ, such as orders on Saturday versus Sunday. A trend asks how a measure changes in time order. A distribution describes how ...
