Directional Costing with Unit Economics and Calculator Checks

Directional cloud costing estimates monthly spend and cost per completed order from labeled unit drivers instead of promising an exact bill. This hands-on lesson compares AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud calculator inputs and runs sensitivity checks. Covers: unit economics, peak-to-average factor, cache hit rate, data egress, standing versus variable costs, low and high scenarios, quota risk. Practice: Directional costing. Prerequisites: Cloud pricing models.

A customer needs a next-day monthly cloud ballpark for the seasonal storefront and a cost per completed order. This round scores whether we can turn an incomplete requirement into a defensible directional estimate without presenting a calculator total as a promised bill.

Start by defining a successful business transaction as one shopper journey that reaches checkout and produces a completed order. A cart addition, payment attempt, or page view is not the denominator unless the customer explicitly wants that measure. Unit economics then expresses estimated monthly cost against completed orders, using estimated monthly cost / successful orders.
