Surface Quotas as Capacity Risk in Your Design

Cloud service quotas are provider-enforced limits that can block autoscaling even when the code is healthy. This interactive lesson maps compute choices to quota families and uses AWS Service Quotas as evidence for design decisions. Covers: Regional core limits, container task and load balancer limits, serverless concurrency, IP address capacity, increase lead times, pre-provisioning, and multi-Region contingencies. Practice: What should I say about quotas? Prerequisites: Autoscaling and compute execution models.

In a system-design interview, quota reasoning tests whether we identify capacity limits that can block an otherwise correct scaling design. Two weeks before the seasonal storefront launch, the target Region has tighter limits than the development Region. If the interviewer asks what could stop autoscaling when the code is healthy, we should name quotas before assuming a software fault.

A quota is a provider-enforced limit on a resource or API rate. Its scope may be an account, subscription, or project, and it may apply within one Region or globally. During a traffic spike, insufficient compute capacity, load balancer resources, or available IP addresses can stall scale-out, reject provisioning requests, or throttle control-plane operations.

Inspect the boundary where the storefront consumes capacity and where the provider ...
