What is DNS? #

Domain Name System is the phonebook that contains the address of every website in the world.

From your Networking 101, you might remember that every server has an IP address. But IP addresses are difficult to remember and type e.g. if I told you that to visit the website at “2606:4700:10::6814:6b7”, you wouldn’t probably remember it. But if I told you to visit “educative.io”, it’s much easier to remember.

However, the servers on the internet just have an IP address and don’t know what their “nickname” is.
