How ML Rounds Are Scored

Explore how to approach machine learning questions in data science interviews by framing the decision, defining prediction units, selecting baselines, and validating model evaluations. This lesson helps you interpret model outcomes and measurement criteria to provide clear, defensible answers during interviews.

Machine learning questions in a data science interview test whether we can turn a product question into a defensible prediction decision. A representative prompt might ask how to reduce fraudulent transactions, predict customer churn, order posts in a feed, or evaluate an AI-generated support draft. We answer out loud, then handle a changed constraint, such as fraud prevalence falling to 1%1\%.

This is not a dedicated machine learning engineering interview. We are not designing serving architecture, distributed training, latency budgets, or feature stores. A dedicated machine learning engineering interview may probe those areas in depth. Grokking the Machine Learning System Design Interview is a useful resource when that is the preparation goal. Here, the test is applied judgment in plain language.

The chapter covers four representative question families:

  • Framing and model choice, such as "Should we predict whether a customer churns or rank customers for retention outreach?"

  • Evaluation metrics, such as "Fraud is rare and manual review is limited. How would we measure success?"

  • Underperformance diagnosis, such as "Why does validation look strong while performance drops for the newest week?"

  • AI and large language model (LLM) evaluation, such as "How would we know whether support-answer drafts help agents and customers?"

A correct answer starts by naming the decision and its ...
