Copy - Use-case of Monitoring a Service

Learn the practical aspect of monitoring service.

Detection of BGP leak

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) manages the routing on the Internet. Our proposed system can detect leaked routes of service. A leaded route occurs when an autonomous system propagates some routing announcement(s) beyond their intended scope.

Consider the following example where a service is announcing a 216.58.192.0/19 route to other autonomous systems and a more specific route (216.58.192.0/22) to one autonomous system (that was not supposed to announce it further). (Remind that IP forwarding picks the longest prefix as a match. In the above example, a /22 will be longer than a /19 prefix.) Due to configuration errors, this more specific route leaks to the Internet, and it being more specific, all traffic was going through the wrong autonomous system (that was dropping the traffic.)
