Observability Using SageMaker Model Monitor and Clarify

Understand how to use Amazon SageMaker Model Monitor to detect data drift and anomalies, and SageMaker Clarify to assess bias and explainability in generative AI models. This lesson helps you ensure fairness, accuracy, and responsible AI behavior in deployed GenAI systems through effective monitoring and governance.

Deploying a generative AI system is not the end of the lifecycle. Once models and supporting workflows are running, organizations must continuously observe behavior to ensure outputs remain accurate, fair, and aligned with expectations. Amazon SageMaker Model Monitor and Amazon SageMaker Clarify address this need by providing managed observability and governance capabilities within the SageMaker ecosystem.

Role of observability in GenAI deployments

Observability in GenAI systems differs from traditional application monitoring. While infrastructure metrics such as latency or error rates remain important, they do not capture whether model behavior is changing in undesirable ways. GenAI systems can degrade silently due to data drift, changes in input distributions, biased outputs, or a loss of explainability, even when endpoints remain healthy.

SageMaker Model Monitor and SageMaker Clarify address these risks at different layers. Model Monitor focuses on detecting changes and anomalies over time, such as shifts in input data or prediction characteristics. Clarify focuses on understanding and assessing model behavior, particularly around bias and explainability. Together, they provide ...
