Inside Google's FDE Teams
FDE roles at Google differ in their engineering responsibilities, expected deliverables, and collaboration with customers or partner teams. Some FDE roles focus on implementing and debugging applications in customer environments, while others involve integrating benchmarks and evaluation workflows for model development teams. Tailor your preparation to the role's engineering responsibilities, including integration requirements, system complexity, and data readiness. Use examples from your previous work to explain your technical contributions, decisions, and measurable outcomes in relation to the target role. Compare the GenAI, Applied AI, Data, Consulting, and DeepMind roles to identify differences in engineering responsibilities and expected deliverables. Use those differences to select relevant project examples and prioritize skill gaps before interviewing.
Two Google FDE job postings describe different engineering responsibilities:
One role focuses on developing, debugging, and deploying AI agent applications with partners in customer environments.
The other focuses on integrating external benchmarks into evaluation workflows and providing evaluation results to model development teams.
Both roles require engineering and external collaboration, but their deliverables and the teams they support differ. Choose the role to prepare for by comparing your demonstrated engineering experience with its delivery responsibilities. Prioritize roles that align with your verified contributions rather than relying on perceived seniority in job titles.
Same title, different deliverables
Consider the engineering experience and supporting evidence relevant to each role:
Strategic Partners GenAI: Explain how you implemented and debugged a production AI integration, resolved deployment issues, and collaborated with partner engineers to deliver a working system.
Kaggle, DeepMind: Explain how you integrated external benchmarks, conducted systematic evaluations, and reported actionable findings to model research teams.
The Strategic Partners role identifies integration complexity, data readiness, and state management as key challenges in production deployments. The role also involves leading and developing engineering teams, collaborating with partner engineers, implementing evaluation and observability systems, strengthening partners' delivery capabilities, and developing reusable modules or proposing product improvements.
The Kaggle role focuses on integrating external benchmarks into evaluation workflows, conducting joint evaluations using partner-specific datasets, developing reference implementations and technical publications, and building tools that feed evaluation results back to research teams. These responsibilities come from a specific DeepMind job posting. Focus preparation for this opening on benchmark integration and research feedback, but do not assume these responsibilities apply to every DeepMind FDE role.
An example from a previous integration project may be relevant to either role. The supporting evidence should match the role. For Strategic Partners, explain whether the integration contributed to a customer application that met its acceptance criteria. For Kaggle, explain whether it produced reliable evaluation results that helped research teams assess model capabilities.
Comparing five tracks
Compare FDE roles across five categories: GenAI, Applied AI, Data, Consulting, and DeepMind. These categories may overlap and do not represent Google's complete organizational structure. For each category, examine the primary workload, engineering deliverables, collaborating teams or partners, collaboration patterns, and measurable outcomes.
GenAI: The Strategic Partners GenAI role focuses on building AI agent workflows and integrating them into customer environments. Deliverables include production-ready, reusable AI workflows, evaluation pipelines, and observability tooling. FDEs work directly with partner engineers to build and deploy these systems. Relevant outcomes include deployment success, customer activation, user adoption, and engagement metrics.
Applied AI: The Applied AI role focuses on developing conversational AI prototypes into production-ready applications and supporting the engineering lifecycle. Prepare an example of application delivery that explains the changes made between prototype and production, the customer requirements behind those changes, and the evidence used to confirm acceptance. The specific team and engagement determine which customer stakeholders are involved and how frequently engineers collaborate with them.
