Fahim ul Haq is the co-founder and CEO of Educative, a hands-on learning platform for software engineers. He spent nearly a decade as a software engineer at Microsoft and Meta, where he gained deep experience building large-scale distributed systems. His work spanned Project Red Dog at Microsoft, which evolved into Microsoft Azure, and Scuba, Meta's real-time data analytics engine. In 2015, Fahim co-founded Educative to help developers get hands-on with new skills. Fahim's courses have helped hundreds of thousands of engineers learn System Design and prepare for technical interviews. Fahim earned his M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 2015.

What You'll Learn

  • Explain what a Google Forward Deployed Engineer does and how the role differs from solutions architects, consultants, and product engineers.
  • Build agents on the Gemini stack using function calling, ADK, MCP, and A2A, and decide when a managed runtime beats self-hosting.
  • Design grounded text-to-SQL and retrieval systems over BigQuery that enforce data access in the database, not in the prompt.
  • Build evaluation harnesses, guardrails, and observability that separate real readiness from curated demo success.
  • Structure answers for each round of Google’s interview loop, from coding and vibe coding to agentic system design and Googleyness.
  • Scope customer problems, defend architecture trade-offs under challenge, and make only commitments supported by the evidence.

About this course
WHY I WROTE THIS COURSE
Google's Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) focus on building and deploying solutions for customer-specific requirements rather than primarily developing features for a central product roadmap. They work within customer environments, integrating Gemini-based applications with existing data systems, coordinating with stakeholders, and meeting security and compliance requirements. This course develops those engineering and customer-facing skills while helping you prepare for Google FDE interviews. I developed this course based on my experience building large-scale systems at Microsoft and Meta and interviewing hundreds of candidates across both companies. The recurring weaknesses I observed went beyond technical knowledge. Even experienced engineers struggled to explain their reasoning through ambiguous problems, justify trade-offs when challenged, or identify requirements that introduced unacceptable risks. My work on Scuba at Meta reinforced that lesson: engineering decisions need evidence that a system meets its stated requirements. The course begins with FDE responsibilities and deliverables, then introduces the Google AI technologies and integration patterns relevant to the role, including the Gemini API, Agent Development Kit (ADK), MCP, A2A, grounding, and BigQuery. You'll learn to design agents with appropriate access controls, measurable performance, and the observability needed to diagnose production failures. You'll then practise the major interview stages, from initial screening and technical discussions to customer-focused and final interviews, using a structured approach for each. You'll apply these skills to three realistic case studies: retail text-to-SQL analytics, customer service agents operating under EU AI regulatory requirements, and document processing for a public-sector agency. By the end, you'll have practised defining customer requirements, designing solutions around real-world constraints, and supporting your technical decisions with evidence.

These are high-quality courses. Trust me the price is worth it for the content quality. Educative came at the right time in my career. I'm understanding topics better than with any book or online video tutorial I've done. Truly made for developers. Thanks

You guys are the gold standard of crash-courses... Narrow enough that it doesn't need years of study or a full blown book to get the gist, but broad enough that an afternoon of Googling doesn't cut it.
