## Why mathematical logic?

**Mathematical logic** is the study of how we reason. Reasoning allows us to infer new conclusions from the current body of knowledge that we already have. We want this reasoning to be sound and precise.

By using tools from logic, we can precisely formulate statements, state our assumptions, ask questions, and express our existing knowledge. We can make valid conclusions about the phenomenon that we are studying. Logic allows us to examine any particular line of reasoning and its soundness. In other words, it will enable us to identify flawed reasoning.
