Internet

  • Internet is a massive ‘network of networks’. 
  • Millions of Wide Area Networks (WAN) come together to form a networking infrastructure of the internet for the exchange of data.
  • The Internet Service Provider (ISP),  CSP ( Communication Service Provider), Contnet Networks are a few types of Wide Area networks that combine together to give rise to Earth Sized Network called 'Internet'
  • Internet makes use of the TCP/IP protocol stack. TCP/IP is explained in the earlier section. 
  • Essentially Internet connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet.
  • Two important and well known services provided by the internet are email and hypertext. 
    • Hypertext is a method of instant cross-referencing. Wikipedia is an example of hypertext page.
  • Due to the massive growth of internet, as the people kept on adding information and websites, the shortage of IPv4 addresses has resulted in IPv6 scheme which will be discussed in the next section.
  • World Wide Web (WWW) is not the same as Internet. It is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet.
    • WWW is built on top of Internet and is to meant to provide the services to the users connected via Internet.


  • Internet is a public facility and provides many services. Some of the most common services are as follows :

  1. World Wide Web (WWW) ( websites such as Yahoo.com , Search Engines such as google.com)
  2. E-Mail
  3. Telnet ( Login to remote devices )
  4. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) ( To transfer files to remote computers)
  5. Ecommerce ( Amazon, Ebay, Paypal , Online Banking)
  6. Social Media
  7. Blogs
  8. VoIP ( Skype)
  9. Instant Messaging ( Skype , Whatsapp )
  10. Peer-to-peer networks for file sharing.
