IPv6
- IPv6 is the next generation of IP protocol.
- Just like IPv4, It is used to assign the IP addresses to the machines for communication.
- IPv6 is born out of the concern with the eventual depletion of the IPv4 address space which was very limited
- Traditional model of classful addressing of IPv4 does not allow the address space to be used to its maximum potential.
- IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, theoretically allowing 2^128, or approximately 3.4×10^38 addresses.
- The total addresses in IPv6 are
- 340 undecillion addresses which translates to
- 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456
- Below we are comparing the IPv4 address header with IPv6 header which is clearly much larger than the IPv4.
