DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
- DHCP is a widely used TCP/IP protocol.
- It is used to assign IP addresses (which are defined in the scope only) automatically to the computer system in the network.
- For example your wireless router at home assigns IP addresses to your device (computer, laptop, phone) as soon as it connects to the network
- It makes life very much easier than previous WINS Server.
- It can also provide Static IPs to whatever server require like DNS FTP
- Diagram below explains how DHCP assigngs IP addresses
- DHCP Client requests an IP address upon joining the network and DHCP Server assigns each client (computer) an IP address from its IP Address database.
