Variations of PMs in Apple

The TPM role at Apple offers a lot of opportunities for career advancement.

  • From the TPM role, we can advance towards a senior role like Manager or Director, or even become a senior TPM. Senior TPMs handle complex programs with a massive scope for growth.
  • Some TPMs may switch their career towards roles like Engineering Managers or Product Managers.

There are different names for TPM roles at Apple. Some of their TPMs are called Engineering Program Managers (EPMs).

Hardware EPM

In the hardware team, EPMs work on different hardware technologies like cameras and batteries. These technologies vary from the functional unit.   • To succeed in this role, we must have high energy and a calm mindset. Also, we need to be prepared to solve conflicts and navigate through their ambiguities.
  • We must have a sharp eye, with attention to detail. Our key responsibility should be flawless execution of tasks leading to successful outcomes.

Software EPM

Software EPMs are partners in all stages of the release. Their responsibilities start with scoping the work and features, while prioritizing leadership. They also improve the efficiency of their team by upgrading work tools and reducing toil. Successful SW EPM has strong communication skills and great attention to detail.

TPMs in operations and supply chain

In the operations and supply chain department, we may oversee different areas, depending on the team. Some examples of such areas include process development, introduction of new products, supplier execution, and quality planning.
