Anthropic is an AI safety company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and structured as a Public Benefit Corporation. The company builds the Claude model family spanning three size tiers (Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus), Claude Code, an agentic coding assistant, and computer use capabilities that allow Claude to navigate desktop environments directly.

As enterprise demand for production Claude deployments is growing, Anthropic is expanding its customer-facing engineering team. The company uses the title Applied AI Engineer for this role rather than Forward Deployed Engineer, though the work is the same. Applied AI Engineers embed with customers, scope AI deployments, and ship production systems inside their environments. Before examining the loop, it helps to understand what the role involves and what Anthropic is looking for.

The role and its requirements

The Applied AI Engineer at Anthropic owns customer engagements end-to-end. This means running discovery, architecting the solution, building it inside the customer’s environment, and remaining the primary technical contact through launch.

According to Anthropic’s published job description, core responsibilities include the following.

  • Embedding with enterprise customers to lead deep technical engagements from discovery through deployment.

  • Partnering with account executives to understand customer requirements and architect Claude-based solutions.

  • Delivering technical artifacts including MCP servers, sub-agents, and agent skills for production workflows.

  • Identifying patterns across engagements and contributing insights back to Anthropic’s product and engineering teams.

On the requirements side, Anthropic expects 4+ years of engineering or customer-facing technical experience, production experience with LLMs including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and MCPModel Context Protocol is Anthropic’s standard for connecting agents to external tools., and proficiency in Python or TypeScript. The ability to navigate ambiguity across technical and organizational domains is treated as a core requirement alongside communication skills.
