The Four Interview Rounds

FDE interview loops typically run 4 to 6 rounds over 3 to 5 weeks, depending on the company. Some companies combine elements across fewer sessions. There are four core round types that appear consistently across FDE hiring processes, and each one tests a different dimension of the role. It includes:

• Decomposition round

• Customer simulation round

• Technical round

• Behavioral round

Each round has its own format, its own evaluation criteria, and its own preparation needs. Knowing what each one is testing before it starts makes preparation targeted rather than generic.

The decomposition round

The decomposition round tests whether we can work through an ambiguous problem systematically. It asks us to do what the role demands in a real engagement: identify what is actually being asked, and reach a clear problem statement before proposing how to address it.

What the round looks like

In the decomposition round, companies provide an ambiguous enterprise problem with no defined scope or single correct answer. We have 60 minutes to work through it. For example, we might be asked how a healthcare network could reduce the two hours physicians spend daily on clinical documentation, how a financial services company could automate loan application review that currently takes underwriters three to four days per file, or how a retail company could handle 10,000 daily support tickets that their team can no longer process manually within an acceptable response window.
