Lesson Creation

Here are a few tips we send to all authors to help get them started.

How should I get started with writing the course?

The process is similar to the way you would write any other content. But remember, some planning is always great!

  • Define the prerequisites for your course by writing a detailed course outline. Consider the following:

    • Goals: What should the students achieve by the end of this course?

    • Duration: Try to map out your class material so the students can complete the course in 4-6 weeks.

    • Lessons: Each lesson should not take more than 10-15 mins to read.

    • Interactivity: Try to have an interactive example in the first 2-3 lessons.

Common FAQs

widget

1. How long should each lesson be?

Consider that your material is technical in nature, and students are reading it for the first time. For every ten minutes of learning, it is helpful to budget 200-1000 words of content (inclusive of explanatory text, quiz text, code, etc.).

2. How many lessons should my course have?

A short course has ~25 lessons in it. An average-length course has ~25-60 lessons in it. A long course can have 60+ lessons. These are rules of thumb only.

3. How do I know if I should create one long course or two shorter courses?

This varies by author preference and intended learning outcomes. However, as the number of lessons approaches 75 and up, authors should evaluate if learners would benefit from more than one course on the subject.
