Context Window Overflow: When Long Threads Silently Break Triage

Explore how context window overflow can cause AI triage systems to misroute tickets silently despite correctly formatted outputs. Understand the difference between hard API limits and soft model influence over long inputs, and learn practical workflow techniques like trimming, extracting recent messages, and summarizing to maintain routing accuracy and consistency across varying thread lengths.

A support triage request includes a rubric near the top: billing issues must use category="billing" and priority="high". A long email thread follows the rubric in the same prompt. The model returns valid JSON with category="other" and priority="normal", even though the customer states near the top of the thread that they were charged twice.

The workflow still auto-routed the ticket, so downstream steps used the incorrect category and priority. As the combined input grows, two distinct failure modes can occur. If the request exceeds the model’s context limit, the API rejects the call with an explicit error that is easy to identify in a run log. The failure in this example is less obvious: the request stayed within the context limit, but the model still failed to follow the earlier rubric after processing a large amount of later text. The instruction was present in the context, but the model did not apply it correctly.
