Map the Workflow Across n8n, Zapier, and Make

Explore how to design and map a support inbox triage workflow across automation platforms such as n8n, Zapier, and Make. Understand platform-agnostic workflow specifications, normalization of inputs, validation gates, retry logic, and logging mechanisms. Learn to maintain consistent behavior while adapting to different platform components, enabling you to build portable, reliable AI-driven automation workflows that handle errors and human approvals effectively.

Every automation platform labels components differently, but the workflow ports cleanly when we preserve the same boundaries. A trigger ingests an event, an HTTP call sends data out to an LLM endpoint, a router picks a path, and a run log shows what happened. Once those boundaries stay intact, the rest is translation work.

This lesson treats the full minimal support triage workflow as a platform-agnostic spec that can be implemented in n8n, Zapier, or Make without relying on vendor-specific AI blocks.

A platform-agnostic workflow spec

With portability as the goal, the workflow becomes a set of steps plus a data contract that every step agrees to. The key constraint is that the LLM interaction stays an HTTP request and the intake stays a webhook or polling trigger so the design does not depend on one platform’s proprietary connector surface.

To make the steps portable, we normalize the input into a single payload shape that all later steps consume, for example:

  • ticket_id as a stable identifier

  • subject and body as the text the triage uses

  • customer_email for notifications

  • received_at as an ISO timestamp

  • source as a short string like ...
