Test Failures and Fix Workflow Validation
Explore methods to diagnose and fix workflow failures in AI automation using platforms like n8n. Learn how to handle malformed payloads, JSON validation errors, and implement validation gates, retries, and human approvals. Understand how to maintain stable data contracts and prevent silent failures for predictable workflow operation.
We'll cover the following...
A run just broke in the n8n triage workflow. The router shows missing fields, so it either errors out or takes a default path that looks valid but routes the case incorrectly. The cause is usually boring and repeatable: either the incoming payload key changed, or the LLM step returned text that is not parseable as JSON.
This drill stays safe and local. We do not use real emails, real tickets, or credentials, and we only break one thing at a time.
Success evidence is concrete:
Failing step: We can point to the exact failing step in run history.
Named failure: We can name the specific missing key or validation failure observed in step output.
Fixed run: We can show a fixed run where the workflow routes correctly, or it escalates to human in the loop after a controlled retry loop.
Rule: Do not patch by adding more branches. Fix the data contract or add a validation gate that fails loudly and routes predictably.
Failure path A: malformed intake payload
With the drill constraints set, the first failure class to create is a malformed intake payload. Change or omit one required field, such as renaming body_text to body or sending it as an empty string, then run the workflow so the platform records a real run ...
