Graceful Degradation and User-Facing Resilience
Explore strategies to maintain chat usability when AI features face frequent failures by implementing graceful degradation. Learn to manage UI states, disable AI affordances safely, preserve user inputs, and provide clear feedback. Understand triggers for degraded mode and methods to handle mid-stream errors with a state model to keep the interface consistent and reliable.
Instrumentation tells you a turn failed. This lesson is about what the UI does the moment failures stop being occasional, and start being frequent enough that the whole feature needs to step back.
The chat UI must stay usable even when the AI provider is intermittently unavailable. The task is user-initiated generation with acceptable latency of about 5 to 15 seconds per request, an accuracy bar that avoids confident fabrication when signals look unsafe, a context budget that fits a single chat turn plus recent history, and a cost ceiling that prevents uncontrolled retry storms. Updates to this behavior should ship without model retraining, so the control point is frontend state plus server-side flags.
With those constraints, the failure to prevent is an AI error that cascades into global UI brokenness, such as disabled form submission, blocked navigation, or a spinner that never resolves because a promise chain never completes. Graceful degradation means the UI treats AI as optional. You can turn off AI affordances and still complete the primary task flows with clear status and preserved user input.
