Persisting Conversation State

Explore how to manage conversation state durability in AI chat applications by choosing appropriate storage scopes, implementing write policies that prevent partial data persistence, and using versioned records. Learn to resume conversations reliably after refreshes or crashes without duplicating tool calls or corrupting sessions.

Handling a different provider's event shape is one kind of durability problem, staying correct across a single response. Surviving a refresh entirely is a bigger one, and it starts with deciding where the conversation actually lives. A chat UI changes on every streamed token and on every tool event, but persistence layers charge you for every write, every byte, and every privacy exposure. If you treat persistence as a mirror of the UI, you usually end up writing partial buffers, corrupting sessions, or leaking data to the wrong place.

Scope is choosing where conversation state lives and defining a write policy that survives refresh, supports or rejects cross-device continuity, and recovers cleanly from crashes.

Durability and portability drive the decision. A refreshed tab wipes in-memory state, localStorage survives refresh but stays inside one browser profile, and server persistence can follow a user across devices but requires an authenticated boundary and explicit data handling rules.
