The Minimal Proxy: Just Enough, Not a Back-End Project

Explore how to design and implement a minimal proxy server that acts as a secure intermediary between the browser and AI providers. Learn to handle authentication, rate limiting, and streaming response data without buffering. Understand the differences in streaming transports and how to maintain a stable proxy contract while avoiding unnecessary backend complexity.

The decision to keep secrets server-side needs a real shape now: something that actually sits between the browser and the provider. A browser UI needs to show tokens as they arrive, but it cannot hold provider API keys, and each request still needs to map to a specific logged-in user so you can enforce who can call and how often. Those constraints force one architectural move, a single server-side endpoint that the browser calls, which attaches the provider credential and streams the response back without buffering.

Scope stays tight, one endpoint such as POST /api/ai that forwards to the OpenAI Responses API and returns a stream to the browser, nothing more.

You will interact with an architecture sketch that highlights where secrets attach and where ...
