Disadvantages of the Cloud

Explore the potential disadvantages and challenges of cloud computing to better understand cost management, security concerns, vendor lock-in, and hybrid cloud solutions. Learn how to address these factors when designing scalable, reliable, and secure cloud applications that meet business needs.

There are always two sides to everything. So far, we have learned about cloud computing, its history, how it works, benefits, use cases, etc. Now, let's talk about downsides or drawbacks of cloud computing.

Here are some of the points that we need to consider. They are not necessarily disadvantages or drawbacks but more things we need to be conscious of. If we keep these things in mind, we can focus on the positives of cloud computing.

Cost

When designing any cloud solution, we need to consider the cost. Just because we run our workloads in the cloud doesn’t mean it will be cheaper. It’s an essential part of the solution design. Cloud platforms offer numerous services because they provide a generic platform that can be used for solving several scenarios. It is our job as solution architects to pick up the right service based on our use case that is cost-effective, scalable, resilient, and robust.

The good thing is that almost every cloud vendor provides a price calculator or estimator that we can use to estimate the cost of the proposed solution.

Note: Here are price calculators from AWS and Azure. ...
