AI for Frontend Engineers

AI features are becoming part of frontend development alongside concerns such as state management and data fetching. Calling a model API from a React application can be straightforward, but deploying an AI-powered feature requires treating model output as untrusted input. Prompts also need to be treated as production inputs rather than informal chat messages. This course shows frontend engineers how to design and handle these interactions as production application concerns. I built this course from my years building cloud infrastructure at Microsoft and from co-founding Educative and leading the engineering of its platform since 2015. Across both roles, the core engineering problem was the same: build reliable systems on top of components that can fail or behave unpredictably. AI services introduce the same reliability problem in a different form, and I've seen frontend teams treat them like conventional API requests when they need the same defensive engineering applied to any external dependency with variable or unpredictable behavior: validation, graceful degradation, and explicit failure handling. You’ll begin with current frontend engineering practices, then examine how AI changes frontend architecture, state, and interaction patterns. From there, you’ll cover prompt engineering in depth, using an interactive prompt widget to explore practical scenarios before moving into implementation. You’ll then explore React implementation by building focused features: classifying the sentiment of input text, generating a length-constrained summary, and detecting contradictions between two text inputs. You’ll learn UX patterns that make AI-powered interfaces predictable and resilient when model output is uncertain, incomplete, or incorrect. Whether you're integrating an AI-powered feature into an existing product or want a clear framework before implementation, this course provides a frontend-focused approach to designing and implementing AI-powered features.
