Discovery and Scoping
Explore how to conduct discovery and scoping in a healthcare setting to ensure HIPAA compliance. Understand how to identify precise data needs, design a secure integration with Claude via MCP, choose the right deployment environment, and clarify approval responsibilities. This lesson prepares you to handle sensitive patient data carefully while defining system boundaries and stakeholder requirements during the Anthropic FDE interview.
The Lakeview brief sets the goal and the rules. Staff want faster answers to scheduling calls, patient data must stay within a HIPAA-covered path, and the assistant may see only what the task needs. What the brief leaves open is exactly what each call needs, how Claude should reach the data, which deployment path fits, and who approves the result. Finding those answers is the work of discovery.
In Anthropic’s FDE loop, discovery appears in the customer conversation roleplay that some loops include, and in the opening minutes of the technical screen and the final panel. In a healthcare case, interviewers watch closely for whether the candidate asks about patient data before proposing anything.
The most useful first conversations happen with clinical operations.
Starting with clinical operations
IT knows how Lakeview’s systems connect. It does not know which questions callers ask or what a staff member reads on the screen while answering them. Those facts live with the front-desk lead, the clinical lead, and the staff who take calls every day, and they decide what the assistant needs to see.
Questions for clinical operations focus on the work itself.
The calls: Which scheduling questions come up most, and which take the longest to answer?
The screen: When answering each question, which parts of the record does a staff member actually read?
The edges: What do staff do when a caller asks about their condition ...
