The Values Round
Explore how to approach the values round in Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer interviews. Learn to engage honestly with questions on AI safety, ethical dilemmas, and decision-making under uncertainty. This lesson guides you in reflecting on your values, forming authentic responses, and demonstrating sound judgment without relying on rehearsed answers.
The values round is a conversation of about 45 minutes, often with an interviewer from outside engineering. Anthropic runs a version of it for every role, from researchers to sales, and for FDE candidates it counts as much as the technical rounds. Many candidates describe it as the stage where the most people fail.
It also feels different from other behavioral interviews. The interviewer asks about AI safety, about our own values, and about times we struggled with a hard decision. Then they keep asking, often about how a situation felt and why we chose what we did. Polished answers tend to come apart under that kind of follow-up, while honest ones get stronger.
Preparing well starts with understanding what the interviewer is trying to learn.
What the values round evaluates
The round looks for how we think when a question has no clean answer.
Engagement with the mission: Whether we have thought seriously about AI’s risks and benefits, and why Anthropic’s approach matters to us.
Comfort with complexity: Whether we can hold competing considerations without collapsing them into a simple answer.
Intellectual honesty: Whether we admit uncertainty and the limits of what we know, even when a confident answer would sound better.
Second-order thinking: Whether we consider the longer-term and indirect effects of a decision.
Ethical reasoning: How we weigh values that conflict, and how we act when the stakes are real.
Self-awareness: Whether we understand our own reactions, mistakes, and growth.
