The hiring manager round is a deep dive into the work we have already done. The interviewer is usually the person who would lead the team we join, and the conversation mixes technical and behavioral questions about a small number of past projects. It is less about what we know and more about how we decided, built, and learned.

Most candidates expect to describe their projects. Fewer expect how far the follow-ups go. A first answer about a project leads to a question about one decision, then a question about the alternatives, then a question about how we knew the result was good. The round rewards stories that stay specific and honest three or four questions deep.

Preparing for that depth starts with knowing what the hiring manager is listening for.

What the hiring manager assesses

The round looks at several qualities at once.

  • Decision reasoning: Why we chose one approach over the alternatives, and what tradeoffs we accepted.
