We needn’t keep our adventurer indoors, endlessly exploring dungeons. If we’d rather our hero explore a forest or an abandoned city overrun by hordes of monsters instead, we can thank themes. With themes, we can radically change the look and feel of our game.
Changing map themes is a great way to make a game design our own. By changing level appearance, you have an opportunity to make a bold visual statement about your game, whether it be sci-fi, fantasy, gothic horror, or something completely different.
What will we learn?
In this chapter, we’ll continue working with traits as we create a map theme trait to theme our map and randomly pick an appearance for levels when the player starts a new one.
