Individual Contributor Track

Explore the individual contributor track in software engineering, focusing on career progression, key roles, and how to measure impact. Understand the levels from junior to principal engineer and the traits that signify seniority and influence within teams. This lesson helps you grasp the essentials for supporting and developing technical talent.

The first track is the path of the individual contributor, or IC. This is the path of technical contribution. Our ICs are the ones that get the products made, the features shipped, and the architectures implemented. Without ICs, we can’t make software. This is why it’s your duty, as a manager, to ensure that they are able to do their job well and provide them with career development opportunities.

Levels of IC track

A technology company’s IC track typically has a progression that looks something like the following. This is just an example because every company implements its progression slightly differently. Each stage in the track is called a level, and these levels are indicated by the letter L followed by a number.

  • L1: Junior engineer (more common outside of the United States)
