Guidelines for scanning the application

You’ll need to review the applications of each applicant to see whether they are the right fit for the role. If you work for a large company, you may have a recruitment team that does the initial application screening for you. This is primarily an exercise in sense checking rather than a deep analysis of a candidate. Scanning an application, you should be looking for:

  • Whether they have the right amount of experience that you’re looking for in that particular role

  • Whether they have used the technology that you are working with. Or if they haven’t, whether they’ve used something similar enough to enable them to be productive

  • Whether they’ve put time and effort into their application. Although you’re not marking anyone on their spelling, punctuation, and grammar, those that take time to craft their application are worth noting.

  • Whether they’re located near the office for non-remote positions. Are they already a commutable distance, or will they be relocating? Would they need a visa to work at the company?
